Robert Griffin III can’t wait for Mass Effect 3. Sure, he also has a little thing called the NFL draft coming up where he could very well be the number one overall pick, but that means nothing if we don’t save Earth from the Reapers.
Talking to RG3 on the phone, you would never guess this was the guy who just torched the rest of the NCAA to the tune of 4,657 total yards en route to winning a bowl game and the Heisman Trophy.
He comes across as so down to earth that it almost catches you off-guard. His easygoing manner makes it feel as if you’re catching up with an old friend, and not interviewing one of the hottest athletes on the planet.
It’s appropriate that RG3 is on the cover of NCAA Football 13since the numbers he put up at Baylor University last season seem to be straight out of a video game. In a season where Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck was an overwhelming favorite to win the Heisman, Griffin wasted no time putting his name on the map with an incredible last second victory over 15th ranked TCU in which he completed 77.8% of his passes. After the game, some experts questioned whether or not he could keep completing that many passes; he answered them by finishing the season with an incredible 72.4 completion percentage.
At the Heisman ceremony it was Griffin, not Luck, who walked up to accept the trophy. When I asked him about his Heisman win, Griffin, who “watched the Heisman ceremony last season at home on my couch,” took little time in deflecting his personal achievement, instead dedicating the trophy to “Baylor nation.”
The next time he will be walking up on a stage it will be at the upcoming NFL draft. Again the experts are predicting that Andrew Luck will be the number one pick, with Griffin going second. It doesn’t bother him, however, and why should it? He’s been through this before.
When I asked how nervous he would be leading up to the first pick, he told me, “I won’t be nervous because if I get picked first it’s an honor. If I don’t get picked first it’s still an honor to get picked by any team in the NFL draft.” His sincerity is impressive; he truly makes you believe that he will be happy no matter which team picks him, because he just wants to play football.
RG3 also wants to play video games. When I ask him what his favorite games are, he cites Dragon Age: Origins and Mass Effect 2 — not exactly games that cater to the casual crowd. When I push him a little to reveal any other nerdy tendencies, he laughs and says, “Man, I love the Lord of the Rings movies. Some people would say I’m weird for liking those types of movies, but they are so cool.” He reveals the reason he is drawn to fantasy movies and video games: “’cause I will never get to experience anything like that, going out there with a sword and shield and fighting demons that don’t exist.”
While RG3 comes across as a very relaxed and laid back person, on the field he is the exact opposite, playing with an intensity and drive that propel his team to victory. His accomplishments also extend to the classroom, where he earned his degree while maintaining a 3.67 GPA. Considering all of this, it is appropriate that his favorite superhero is the Incredible Hulk. “David Banner is pretty smart. I like to think I’m pretty smart with what I was able to do academically, but whenever I get on the field I turn into the Incredible Hulk and I am unstoppable.”
NCAA Football 13 will be released on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on July 10th.
