EA: Game Console Cycle Has ‘Gone Forever’

John Riccitiello

Here today, gone tomorrow, that—in so many words—was what EA CEO John Riccitiello had to say about video game consoles in an earnings call yesterday. Riccitiello was on the phone to discuss EA’s fiscal 2012 first quarter, which he described as “ahead of expectations,” led by strong sales of digital games and the release of first-person sci-fi puzzler Portal 2 (“Portal 2: A Little Better All The Time”). He also name-checked Battlefield 3 and Star Wars: The Old Republic (he says EA’s “bolstered by strong preorders” for both) and, no surprise here, said the company was “pleased” that the NFL lockout had ended (it wrapped up Monday, though the Salt Lake Tribune notes the NBA’s is “just beginning”). EA Sports Add A New Studio In Austin

EA Sports is expanding. The money-printing division of top video game publisher Electronic Arts, the one behind popular annually releasing franchises like Madden and Tiger Woods, revealed at a press conference last week that it is opening up a new studio in Austin, Tex. that will bring 300 new jobs into the company. State governor Rick Perry appeared with publisher executives at BioWare’s Austin office to announce the news. Continue reading EA Sports Add A New Studio In Austin

EA Reports Narrower-Than-Expected Loss

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Video game publisher Electronic Arts Inc, reported a narrower-than-expected loss and raised its second-quarter earnings forecast, as it sold more copies of the puzzle game “Portal 2” than expected and pocketed more money on digital games.

The company also said it had it had sold 200,000 pre-orders of its highly anticipated massive multiplayer game, “Star Wars: The Old Republic,” since the game became open for reservations last week.

“We’re well over 200,000 pre-orders in the first five or six days. From an EA perspective, that is significantly greater than any other EA title we’ve ever had in the first week,” said the company’s finance chief, Eric Brown, in an interview.

Investors are awaiting this year’s launch of “Star Wars: The Old Republic,” an online game that EA hopes will rival Activision Blizzard “World of Warcraft,” which has more than 12 million subscribers. EA is said to be spending more than $100 million to develop “Star Wars.”

EA has not pinned down an exact date for the game’s release but said it would come out during the holiday season.

On Tuesday, EA raised its annual revenue outlook to $3.83 billion to $4.03 billion, slightly higher than the amount Wall Street was expecting.

Part of the revenue boost will come from the acquisition of PopCap games. This month, EA said it would buy the maker of “Bejeweled” in a deal worth up to $1.3 billion. The deal will likely close in August, the company said.

EA, which relies on its sports franchises such as “Madden NFL,” may also see a revenue boost now that a National Football League season will be played next year. The company has previously said it would sell 30 percent to 45 percent fewer Madden games if a full football season was missed.

On Tuesday, EA said its adjusted revenue fell 3 percent to $524 million. This beat the average analyst estimate of $511 million.

The company’s revenue was lower than last year when it released a World Cup-themed soccer game.

EA’s revenue in the quarter was boosted by the sale of digital games, which helped the company beat estimates, said Eric Brown, the company’s finance chief, in an interview.

“Because the other areas of our business, specifically digital, were growing so quickly, we were able to come in at revenue that was only down 3 percent overall,” Brown said.

EA also sold 2 million units of “Portal 2,” a game it distributes for the company Valve. The game features robotic characters and puzzles, and can be played on consoles and on PCs.

EA expects a second-quarter loss of 13 cents to 3 cents per share, roughly in line with analysts’ estimates.

Excluding deferred revenue, the company reported a loss of $123 million, or 37 cents per share. Analysts on average were expecting a loss of 39 cents a share, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

EA, like many video games companies, is starting to offer a wide range of games played over the Internet and on Facebook, to compete with upstarts such as Zynga, which develops simple, casual games.

The company’s digital revenue, which comes partly from games that are played on the Internet, rose 11 percent to $209 million.

EA shares rose 1.4 percent in after-hours trading after closing at $23.81 during the regular Nasdaq session.

HBO Drama Series Influenced By Tyson’s Early Years, To Be Directed By Spike Lee

Earlier today we found out that one Entourage star was interested in bringing the life of former MMA star Kimbo Slice to the big screen. This week we find out Entourage creator Doug Ellin is behind a pilot drama series set to air on HBO that will be influenced by Mike Tyson’s early boxing career. Spike Lee will direct the series titled Da Brick. Tyson and his wife, Lakiha, will be among the executive producers.

Tyson made an appearance on Entourage last season. While on the set he mentioned to Ellin:

“‘Why don’t you do with my life what you did with Mark (Wahlberg’s) life” with “Entourage.”

The series will not be biographic in nature, but will chronicle the life of a young boxer coming up in modern Newark, New Jersey. John Ridley, who helped bring Spike Lee into the project, and Ellin have spent time recently with Tyson in hopes of gathering material to translate into show ideas. Kimbo Slice: From YouTube To The Movie Screen, Biopic In The Works

The man who shot to stardom via internet fighting movies, known as Kimbo Slice, could have his life story portrayed in a movie if one star of TV’s Entourage has his way. In a recent interview with The Wrap Kevin Connolly revealed that he would be interested in directing the film:

“I’m trying to get the Kimbo Slice story made. I have his life rights, we have a script that’s great. It’s out and about, and the powers that be are trying to put the money together.”

I’m not sure having Kimbo’s “life rights” is something that I would brag about, but hey, to each his own. Connolly is hoping the Rolling Stone dubbed “King of the Web Brawlers” will play himself in the feature film. Continue reading Kimbo Slice: From YouTube To The Movie Screen, Biopic In The Works

TSG Madden 12 OF: Owners Announcement

Today we are announcing our upcoming TSG Madden 12 OF Owner lineup. Missing from this lineup you will see regulars such as So Bold oS, Mistborn, Deathpool & many more. While these guys didn’t make the cut for the main league at the start of the season, these guys will have an opportunity to fight their way into the league by playing hard and dominating our D-league. The D-league is where we will be pulling players to play in the main prize league, whenever a main league member leaves for whatever reason (for example: Julius Jackson is leaving after S1 or S2, the best player from the D-League would move up to take his spot). While there are ways to move up to the main prize franchise, you can also lose your spot in the franchise in numerous ways, causing your demotion to the D-league and someones promotion. More on that in upcoming blogs and podcasts, that was just a taste to get you thinking of where we are headed. Continue reading TSG Madden 12 OF: Owners Announcement

Welcome to the 1st Annual TSG Awards: Madden Edition Nomination Ceremony, now that’s a mouthful, especially with these tusks.  Tomorrow night we will crown the winners of the first ever awards for our Madden Franchise, this year there are only 4 awards, hopefully we will expand this as seasons, leagues & years go on. Other than winning Super Bowl’s this will be the award to strive for in the future & will carry more weight going into future leagues & franchises along with a bigger prize attached to it. Currently each award winner will receive 1600 Microsoft Points. Below are the nominees for each award and a few things about that nominee and how they qualify for the award, once again feel free to comment below.
