There will be no return of Crew mode for NBA 2K13. 2K Sports finally responded to questions on the subject stating that, while they know there is demand for the feature and they hope to get it back into the series in the future, they did not have time to do so this year.
Crew was cut in favor of the new MyTeam mode which is conceptually similar to Ultimate Team mode found in numerous EA Sports titles. It’s understandable that 2K would take that route given MyTeam can be a moneymaker and they missed the early boat on generating revenue through microtransactions (and DLC in general) but are now just catching up in that department.
While this will be disappointing news for many the most important thing is that at least the information is out there. Last year, when Crew was removed without warning from 2K12, consumers were left to discover that on their own. 2K deceptively hid its absence avoiding even a mention of the word “crew” until a month after the game had released when they admitted to numerous online problems and features that had been stripped from the previous iteration.
The debut of Online Association with NBA 2K12 was highly anticipated but turned out to be easily the biggest disappointment about the product. The mode was not in any way ready to be released. Promises about commissioner control were unfulfilled (they had absolutely none), advancement was automated, and the entire structure was so confusing that not even 2K Sports employees could decipher or explain how the mode actually worked. A new video from 2K Sports highlights how Kinect has been implemented in 2K13 allowing for actions such as substitutions and play calling to be made through voice commands. Continue reading
The list of Xbox 360 achievements for NBA 2K13 has made its way out and in doing so has revealed a few new features for the game.
My Player mode looks to be getting a change in name to “MyCareer”, historic teams are to be playable online (last year that was only possible with the DLC), “Blacktop” mode is also going online, and a “Today Association” could be like what was attempted (but never actually worked) with MLB 2K12. Most notably though is the “Play a MyTeam Game Online” achievement which, based on the My Player name change to MyCareer and a separate achievement for Team-Up mode, suggests what could be the equivalent of what “Crew” mode offered until 2K12.
Last year Crew mode was removed upsetting the passionate and vocal group that religiously played it – even more so because the company was deceptive about it not being present in the game. It’s no surprise then that the mode would return and that it would do so with a different name and possibly different purpose.
